What Makes Relationships Work

How do We Predict Divorce?

Can We Predict the Outcome of a Marriage?

If we look at relationships that endure, apparently the ratio of positive gestures to negative stuff  is 5:1. That is, those couples that unconsciously or deliberately set up patterns of counterbalancing every negative gesture, act, word that they do towards their partner with five positive deeds, will have a successful relationship.

So, simplistically, if you do something bad that impacts negatively on your relationship, remember to try and do five positive things pretty quickly thereafter.

That sounds like a lot of work to undo one negative, don’t you reckon?

Maybe it would just be easier to save your marriage by making a conscious effort to reduce the negatives upfront. That seems like a good plan.
