Where Did This Sense of Entitlement Come from?

Read a great blog post on entitlements and the deeply engrained sense that some people have about what life owes them

Do you know someone like that? The kind of person who is always on the lookout for what’s in it for them. They tend to be the last to volunteer and the first to put their hands up when there is a handout going.

So, where did this sense of entitlement come from? Has it been around for years, decades or generations?

An entitlement is “the amount to which a person has a right”. Somewhere along the line we began to replace the word want with entitlement and, instead of approaching life from the John F Kennedy stance of ‘ask not what your country can do for you’, we began to demand things as our right. Yes we have the right to self determination, free speech etc. Those are the rights of people living in a democracy. That’s not what this sense of entitlement is about.

Do you feel you deserve more money, more recognition, more love, more compatible friends, even family and more …..?? Just more of everything really.

Why do you feel you deserve more from life? Sweeping statement, those who put the most into life, expect the least out of it.

As Deborah Fike says:”It’s depressing to think we might not get everything we want out of life, but consider this – we create entitlements from unfair comparison.”

Have you fallen into the entitlement trap? It’s not easy to see the bigger picture if you are in it. So, listen to what you say and catch your thoughts. What do you think you deserve? Are you kidding yourself? How are these thoughts of entitlement holding you back?

So, now you have my thoughts. Leave your comments below.
